Wood, Hattie Lucille (Lucy)

Hattie Lucille ?Lucy? Wood, 96, passed away on November 30, 2012, in Amarillo.

Services will be on Monday, at 10:00 AM, in St. Andrews Episcopal Church with The Reverend Jo Roberts Mann, Rector, officiating. The body will lie in state in the Nave of St. Andrews the evening before her services. Per her wishes, burial will be in Plainview, Texas, next to her parents. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Lucy was born on September 5, 1916, in Plainview, to Perry and Annie Wood. A graduate of Plainview High School, she excelled in basketball and subsequently attended Wayland Baptist College. Following college, her independent spirit led her first to Ft. Worth where she began a career with Terrell Laboratories.

With her family as the love of her life, Lucy didn?t hesitate to return to Amarillo in the 1950?s to help her sister, Novie, raise her children, Debra and Greg. Since then, there has never been a time when she wasn?t referred to as the ?greatest aunt ever?, even by several generations that have followed. A proud woman with a gentle stubbornness, she lived life on her own terms, with a fierce independence, and love of the outdoors.

During her time in Amarillo, she worked for many years at Maywood as the secretary to John Maynard and in the insurance department at Plains Creamery. Throughout those years, she still found time to again work side-by-side with Novie, in the family-owned Little Brown House in Woflin Village. A woman of great faith, Lucy was a devoted member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Amarillo for over 50 years.
She will be missed and forever remembered for her love of gardening, traveling, fishing, the Dallas Cowboys, scotch, and winning a good game of gin rummy, although not necessarily in that order. To those who loved her most, her legacy will be the love she unwaveringly returned to those around her. ?I Love Lucy? has never meant more than it does to those fortunate enough to have laughed with, and been loved by, Lucille.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the caregivers at Comfort Care Home, including Evelyn, Kim, Brenda, and particularly her extraordinary companion and friend Karen Sung.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Novie Mitchell Woods, her brother Revis Dean Wood, and her best friend in the world, Georgia Heath Gasque.

Survivors include her beloved niece and nephews, Debra Mitchell McCartt and husband Joe Bob, Greg Mitchell and wife Julie, all of Amarillo, and Perry Milton Wood and wife Susan of Germantown, Maryland. Great nieces and nephews are Melissa Ballou Kates and husband Ged, Morgan Ballou, Brandon Ballou, Amy Mitchell Griffin and husband John, Jeff Mitchell and wife Jessica, Lizzie Mitchell Sell and husband Rob, Andrew Mitchell and wife Dottie, Dustin Kendall Wood, Tiffany Ann Wood, and 15 great-great- nieces and nephews.
