David was born January 24, 1955 in Plainview, Texas to Eldon & Dorothy Miller Milstead and grew up in Seth Ward. As a teenager he worked with his father at Daffern Steel and Supply. He graduated from Plainview High in 1973 and married Annette Green on September 20, 1974 in Plainview. He was a local businessman, lay pastor, and community servant. Known by some as ?The Mayor of Seth Ward,? he founded and served as president of the Seth Ward Water Supply Corporation to improve the drinking water supplied to that unincorporated community adjoining Plainview on the northeast side. In 1976 he joined his father in opening Milstead Hardware and Welding Supply, a business that David eventually operated for 32 years until his retirement in 2008. His father taught him to give back more than he took in life ? to be a servant, not to be served. In 1999 he was honored by the Better Business Bureau with The Market Place Ethics Award of the South Plains. He was an active church member and deacon, first at Seth Ward Baptist Church and later at the First Baptist Church where he helped with many mission trips. He served on the state cabinet of Gideon International, a worldwide Bible distribution organization. As a lay pastor he served many churches in various capacities. He is a member of the Living Water Emmaus Community. David was instrumental in the construction of the current home of Plainview Christian Academy and served on its Facility and Finance Committee. He was chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Committee and sat on the advisory board for the Southwest Hardware and Implement Dealers Association. He was a member of the Plainview Mineral & Rock Club cutting geodes at rock shows for many years. In 2008 he was inducted into the Centennial Circle of Honor. One thing he missed after his retirement was the interaction with other people, he loved to visit with everyone from the bank, post office and the Co-op.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Becky Milstead Cook; one brother, Richard Milstead and two sisters, Diane McAninch and Cathy Chandler.
David lived for his family, survivors include his wife, Annette Milstead of Plainview; daughters, DeLisa Bailey & husband Brandon, Sierra Milstead and Kendrie Milstead all of Plainview; grandchildren, Courtney Isom, Candalee Isom, Kagen Ashley and Kelby Cook; and sister, Virginia Young & husband Jack of Weatherford and numerous nieces and nephews.
