Barnes, Wesley, Mrs. (Martha Elizabeth Clements)

Martha Elizabeth Clements Barnes, 92 of Plainview, passed away June 2, 2018 after a brief illness. Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at 10:00 am in the First United Methodist Church Chapel with Mike Schafer officiating. Interment will follow in Plainview Cemetery under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview.

A visitation will be held on Monday evening, June 4, 2018 from 5:30 to 7:00 P.M. at Kornerstone.

Martha was born November 6, 1925 in Floyd County, Texas to the late H. Pelham and Evelyn Lane Clements. She attended Prairie Chapel and Aiken schools. She graduated from Plainview High School in 1942, and then attended Lipperts Business College.

She married Wesley Barnes on June 25, 1954 in Plainview, Texas. Martha worked at the Hale County State Bank for 25 years, was a partner with her husband Wesley in farming and ranching and was a self-employed bookkeeper until retirement in 2007. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Iva Wheeler Circle, Harmony Sunday School Class & The ?57 Supper Club. She was a past member of the Business & Professional Women?s Club, a Cub Scout Den Mother as well as an assistant Girl Scout Leader.

She and Wesley loved to travel and took many wonderful trips with family and friends. As often as possible they could be found at their cabin in Ruidoso, where they made lifetime friends with the neighbors. She was quite the sports fan and loved her Texas Rangers, making many trips to the Dallas area to watch them play. She loved those Dallas Cowboys, so much so meals and activities were planned around game time. The only teams she loved more were those of her children and grandchildren.
Martha was a devoted mother and was involved in all the activities her children participated in. But she loved being a grandmother. She baked and decorated many a birthday cake for the grandchildren always including the ?special dime? for good luck placed within the cake. She encouraged the grandchildren to cut the cake anywhere they wanted to see if they would be the one to find the dime. While Martha and Wesley loved the game of bridge, they taught their children and grandchildren how to play ?42?, dominos, chicken foot and various card games and board games. She was a fierce competitor who taught her children and grandchildren how to win and how to lose.

Martha is survived by her children Gary Barnes and wife, Cindy of Lubbock, Texas; Evelyn Barnes and partner Mary Carter, of Boston, Massachusetts; and Joe Barnes and wife, Elaine of Plainview, Texas; four grandchildren; Ryan Barnes of Houston, Texas; Sayla Barnes and friend Dan Doherty, of Austin, Texas; John Barnes and wife Kristen of Seminole, Texas and Ethan Barnes and fianc? Kim of Lubbock, Texas and her cousin Kay Pritchard of Plainview.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Wesley, her parents, H.P. and Evelyn Clements and sister JoAnn Clements.

The family would like to thank Martha?s care givers, grandson Ethan Barnes, Dolly Schulte, Paula Tijerina, Karla Morrison, and especially Mary Zavala, who was not only her caregiver, but companion and friend.

Family suggests memorials be made to Cal Farley?s Boys Ranch, Methodist Children?s Home in Waco, or a favorite charity.
