McAllen- Jeanette R. Hawkins, 83, our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother found peace in Heaven on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at her place of residence. Born on March 18, 1933 in Plainview, Texas to Velma Laird and Julius Richardson.
Jeanette graduated from Borger High School and received her Bachelors of Science and her Master's degree from West Texas State University. She did her Doctorate work at Texas Womens University and Indiana State University. She was an associate professor of Kinesiology at Pan American University for 35 years and coached both the Mens and Womens Gymnastics teams, the swim teams, and the PAU cheerleaders. She was a life member of Beta Sigma Phi, the Gymnastics Association of Texas and a past president and Area III Director of Zonta International. Jeanette was also a member of the Amateur Athletic Union, Texas Association of Health, Physical Education & Dance and the Texas Association of College teachers. She was also a member and sat on the United States Olympic Committee. She was awarded the 2,500 Hour Award from the American Red Cross Safety and Disaster Services. Jeanette lived her life to its fullest and for those who knew her....it was done HER WAY. May she rest in Peace.
Mrs. Hawkins is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Blanch Richardson and Martha Louise Hester and nephew, Larry Noakes. She is survived by her two loving and caring daughters; Teri Lanette H. Ferguson and Tami Lou H. Devine; three grandsons; Nicholas and Patrick Ferguson and William Branden Devine II; one great granddaughter, Avery Ferguson, and her sister, Dorris Richardson Noakes.
Cremation services were held. No local services will be held as per her request. In lieu of flowers, please make your contributions to Mrs. Hawkins's charity of choice The American Red Cross.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care of Ceballos Funeral Home of McAllen.
