He was born to John Franklin McDonough Sr. and Minnie Lee Saunders McDonough on the family farm north of Petersburg on January 27, 1929. He married Evelyn Nadine Spann on June 24, 1960 in Littlefield, Texas. She preceded him in death on March 1, 2013.

Clifton attended Petersburg Schools for 12 years and then went to Texas Tech University where he graduated in May 1950 with a degree in Agronomy and Farm Machinery. He enlisted in the Army on November 16, 1950 where he became a Master Sergeant. He was stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado and literally by the flip of a coin, ended up serving the rest of his time stationed in Alaska instead of going to Korea. He transferred from Active Duty to Reserve Duty on October 23, 1952 and was Honorably Discharged on September 30, 1961. Clifton returned to the farm in Petersburg where he spent the next 67 years raising cattle, cotton, hay and milo. In 2017, the farm was recognized with a Texas Family Land Heritage Award which he was proud to have received. He also built and renovated homes and buildings all over the South Plains area, especially in Petersburg and Plainview. He worked for many years with his father and his brothers before teaming up with Tommy Hildreth or working solo.

Clifton was a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan, Houston Astros Fan and Texas Tech Sports fan. He hated to miss a game on TV or the radio. In his very limited free time, he enjoyed working on his crossword puzzles and watching the Gaithers. He was a devout Christian and a member of the Eastside Church of Christ in Petersburg.

Clifton was preceded in death by his wife, Nadine; parents John and Minnie; Sisters Juanita Rasco and Virginia Hoggins; and brother Phillip Stanley.

Survivors include his Daughters, Beverly and Diane McDonough of Petersburg; Sons David McDonough of Petersburg and Richard McDonough of Lubbock. Sister, Dorothy Burkert of Denver, Colorado and Brothers John and Earle (Faye) McDonough of Plainview and numerous many nieces and nephews.
