Spencer, Woody Lee,Jr.
Woody Lee Spencer, Jr., 93, of Plainview, TX, passed from his earthly life on Feb. 2, 2018 in Roswell, NM. A celebration of life service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Plainview First Assembly with the Rev. Neil Unwin officiating and Emmitt Tipton assisting. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview.
Woody was born July 22, 1924, in Palestine, TX, to Woodie and Lorene (McCaslin) Spencer. He was a senior at Clarendon High School with dreams of becoming a civil engineer when Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941. Feeling a call to serve his country, he left school to become a member of the United States Marine Corp and proudly served on active duty in the South Pacific during World War II. After his enlistment ended, Woody took a job in construction building a church near Canadian, TX. He met his future wife, Ramona "Mona" Price, at a dance in Canadian. They were married on June 26, 1949. Woody and Mona began married life in Lubbock, moving their growing family to Plainview in 1962. He and Mona were supervisors for TOPS, Inc. and through that organization traveled extensively and made many friends. He was a member of Plainview First Assembly. It was the last of three churches he helped to construct over his lifetime and it held a special place in his heart. He served as the church caretaker and handyman well into his 80?s before retiring. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and a lifetime member of Arch Keys Masonic Lodge in Plainview. Woody will be remembered as the ?Best Dad Ever? and the 'World's Greatest Granddad'. He often said his greatest accomplishment in life was his family. He was a hands-on Dad and Granddad who loved nothing more than spending time with his 'kiddos'. He was generous, quick to lend a helping hand, and expressed his love daily in words and actions. He was a talented dancer and a creative cook who enjoyed making meals for his family and friends. He placed a high value on education, receiving his diploma from Clarendon High School more than 60 years after he left school to enlist in the military.
