Owens, Robert Lee (R.L.)
A Celebration of Life for Rev. Robert L. Owens, 97, of Plainview, will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, December 29, 2017 at the First Assembly Church with Pastor Garry Page officiating. Mr. Owens passed from this life on December 25, 2017 in Plainview. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home.
Rev. Robert L. Owens was born on April 27, 1920 in Comanche, OK, to Thomas and Nora Owens. R L went into the service in January of 1942. He served in the US Army in the South Pacific, Papa New Guinea and Good Enough Island from 1942-1944. He came back to the states and married Geneva Oleta Henegar on March 11, 1945 in Plainview. After his discharge, they moved back to Plainview. He worked in several different grocery stores and opened his own store called RL?s Grocery.
Rev. Robert held several positions at the First Assembly of God Church over the years. He was the Sunday School Superintendent, Teacher of Men?s Bible Study, Church Treasurer, etc. After his Miracle of God healing his body in 1966, he surrendered to the call of preaching. He preached in many West Texas Assembly of God Church?s until 1975. He also pastored three churches, Lorenzo, El Paso, and Hale Center until 1985 when he semi-retired. He continued preaching some on the side and sharing his testimony until 1995. He loved working in the yard and raising roses.
Rev. Robert was a life member of the DAV, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the American Legion and the VFW. He got the great honor of being able to go on the South Plains Honor Flight in 2013 with his daughter Sherita Hatch as his escort.
Those left to cherish his memory are his children; Novadell Baker of Lavern, OK, Noland Owens and wife Alexis of Round Rock, TX, Sherita Hatch and husband Mike of Plainview, and Lowell Owens and wife Jan of Lubbock, eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one niece and three nephews.
