Hilliard, Newton

Newton Hilliard, 81, of Plainview passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2017, at First United Methodist Church Chapel in Plainview with Rev. Mike Schafer officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors in Plainview, Texas.

Newton Parr Hilliard was born Oct. 28, 1935, in Lockhart, Texas, to James Vernon and Margaret Lillian (Parr) Hilliard. He graduated from Abilene High School and then attended and graduated from Baylor University. He taught eighth grade history and was a coach. He married Dorothy Hollon in 1960 in Lockhart, Texas. He then began farming and farmed for many years. Newton also served in the U.S. Navy Reserves. Newton was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Edmonson Lions Club.

Newton was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, James Vernon Hilliard II.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hilliard of Plainview; two sons, Newton Hilliard Jr. of Russellville, Ark., and Mark Hilliard of Plainview, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church in Plainview.
