Keeter, Joe
Joe Keeter, 84, of Plainview, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016.
The Celebration of Joe's life will be held on Friday, Sept. 23, 2016, at 3 p.m. in the Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel of Plainview and the visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. the same day. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview.
Joe Keeter was born on Jan. 3, 1932 in Erick, Okla., to Claude Keeter and Fannie Wolf Keeter. He and his late twin sister, Joy Assiter, who preceded him in death by four months, were the last of nine Keeter children. He could not stand to live without his twin sister. Joe started school in Quitaque, Texas, and graduated from Lockney High School as Senior Class President, Most Popular, Mr. Lockney High and starred on the district champion football and basketball teams.
His daughter Jill wrote: From a cotton picking child laborer to help his family, to a kid who would sell his dog in Quitaque to raise money to buy a Coke and candy bar that he shared with his twin sister (Oh . . . By the way, the dog came home every night so he could sell that dog again the next day), a Lockney grocery store and meat company owner, fireworks sales, auction addict, buyer and seller of restaurant equipment, egg rancher and livestock trader. Joe Keeter always was an entrepreneur. He loved to joke and laugh, and never knew a stranger from Kansas City to Juarez, Mexico.
Joe is survived by his children; Perry and his wife Karyn Keeter of Hemet, California, Jill and her husband Clint Fawcett of San Clemente, California, Jack and his wife Colleen Keeter of Anaheim Hills, California; eight grandchildren April, Alison, Jenna, Daniel, Darla, Zac, Grace and Ellie and two great-grandchildren Brayden and Gavin; nephews and nieces; and his brother-in-law, Dale Taylor of Hollis, Oklahoma.
Joe loved his roots as a Texan. He lived the last 4 years of his life at Westridge Manor in Plainview. As sure as the wind blows across the plains of West Texas, he was a generous man. We will see you again Papa Joe. Vaya con Dios!
The family suggests for memorials that you buy or fix a turkey or ham and all the fixings and deliver it to a less fortunate family who is having a hard year, lost a job or needs a hand up for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Tell them "You are honoring Joe Keeter's legacy of feeding people in need," or we suggest you double the check you give to your local church this Sunday and honor the name of Jesus.
Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. at the funeral home Friday, Sept. 23, 2016, immediately following will be a service to celebrate Joe's life at the Kornerstone Funeral Directors, 3605 SW 3rd St., Plainview, TX 79072.
