Koenning, Elmer Ray

Elmer Ray Koenning, 86, of Plainview passed away on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2016, at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Michael Heckman officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2016, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kornerstone.

Elmer was born on April 1, 1930, in Electra, Texas, to Willie Ernest and Selma Kahl Koenning. While serving in the U.S. Army he met and later married Eva Mae Pope on June 1, 1952, near Slocomb, Alabama. Elmer faithfully served his country in the Korean War. Upon his discharge he began his career as a farmer which eventually spanned 50 years. He was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Plainview for 72 years where he served as a Trustee and Elder. While Elmer enjoyed hunting, his life was a testament to his greatest loves, his Lord, his family and his life as a farmer. Those who knew Elmer will remember his work ethic, integrity and his strong faith. He was a dedicated father and husband who was known throughout the community as a man of his word with unshakeable values.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Clarence Lonnie Koenning and one son, David E. Koenning.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Eva Mae Koenning of Plainview; two sons, Michael R. Koenning and wife Kipa of Plainview and Don E. Koenning and wife Dawn Lynn of Abilene; five grandchildren, Lesha Koenning of Midland, Jarret Koenning of Plano, Kody Ray Koenning of Amarillo, Dawn Michelle Almand and husband Jeff of Clyde, Dustin Koenning and wife Tammy of San Antonio; one sister, Willie Mae McMurry of San Angelo, two nephews, Teddy and Laddy McMurry of Midland; four step-grandchildren, Jason Spake of Abilene, Josh Spake of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Sarah Hargrave of Abilene and Rachel Cargile of Abilene and 15 great grandchildren.
