Stapleton, Don Howard

Lubbock ? Funeral services for Don Howard Stapleton, 61, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wood-Dunning Colonial Chapel in Plainview with the Rev. Drew Travis, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Burial will be at Plainview Memorial Park by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home.

Mr. Stapleton died at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

He was born Nov. 17, 1941, in Plainview.

He attended New Mexico Military Institute and was a graduate of Plainview High School. He joined the U.S. Navy after graduation and attended West Texas State University.

He was an artist and started his career in art at the age of 15 making metal sculptures in his father?s machine and welding shop. Some of his sculptures are on display in galleries and museums in New Mexico and Texas, including one at the Texas Tech Museum in Lubbock.

He held various other jobs such as a coffee house owner, salesman, project manager for a delinting plant, carpenter, and was chief administrator of the Lubbock County Sheriff?s Department. He also was active in Alcohol Anonymous since the 1970s.

Survivors include two sons, Breck Stapleton and Kyle Stapleton of Lubbock; a daughter, Laura Sterling of Tatum, N.M.; and three grandchildren, Raven Stapleton and Ann and Jordan Sterling.

His parents, Howard and Emma Stapleton, and a sister, Jan Bourland, are deceased.

Memorials may be made to the Joe Arrington Cancer Center in Lubbock.
