Obituary

Funeral services for Melvin Van Young, 72, of Kress, will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Lemons Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ron Brunson, pastor of New Covenant Church, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery by Lemons Funeral Home. Mr. Young died at 2:41 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, in Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. He was born Nov. 17, 1929, in Fieldton. He grew up in Hawley and attended schools at West Side near Olton and at Hooper, west of Plainview. He was a lifelong farmer and rancher and a member of St. Paul?s Lutheran Church. On July 5, 1947, he married Ruth Bontke in Clovis, N.M. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Elizabeth Franklin and Peggy Miller, both of Plainview; a son Eddy Young of Kress; five brothers, Edgar Young of Kress, Carlton Young and Billy Tom Young, both of Plainview; Earl Young of Bovina, and Mearl Young of Shawnee, Okla.; three sisters, Francis Ready of Friona, Margie Pool of Tulia and Audrea Mahagan of Claytonville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to New Covenant Church, 3300 Kokomo St., Plainview, TX 79072.
