Obituary

Funeral services for Lloyd C. Woods, 82, mayor of Plainview for the past nine years and a city councilman from 1976-84, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church with Dr. Travis Hart, pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Plainview Cemetery by Lemons Funeral Home. Mr. Woods died at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2003, in Covenant Hospital Plainview. He was retired co-owner of Woods and Davenport Insurance and Real Estate.

He was born June 14, 1920, in Rogers, Ark., and married Madge Boyd on June 5, 1943, in Plainview. He was active in many organizations. He was a founder of Crime Stoppers and Meals on Wheels and was serving as president of both organizations at the time of his death. He also supported another crime watch organization, Blue Eyes, and Neighborhood Watch programs. He was involved in Boy Scouting for more than 40 years, serving as scoutmaster of Troop 221 for 14 years. He helped 28 boys advance to Eagle - Scouting?s highest honor - and more than 50 received their God and Country Award. In recognition of his dedication to the program, the Haynes District in 1987 established the annual Lloyd C. Woods Boy Scout Leader Award. It also voted him into its Hall of Fame in 1995. Scouting also has honored him with both the Silver Beaver and Good Shepherd awards.

Mr. Woods was a supporter of the Hale County Senior Citizens Center and enjoyed playing on the balloon volleyball team. He was an organizer of the Plainview-Hale County Industrial Foundation, a former campaign chairman for United Way, a Rotarian for more than 40 years and a Paul Harris Fellow, a former member of the Red Cross board, member of the Plainview Civic Theater board, a deacon at First Baptist Church, a member of the Living Water Emmaus Community, a former member of the board at Wayland and a past regional chairman for the Texas Municipal League.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Gen. George Patton?s Third Army. He was chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Patriotic Committee.

Mr. Woods was named Plainview?s Man of the Year for 2001 and received in 1999 the Citizens Service Award for longtime contributions to Plainview.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Rhoda Cummings of Reno, Nev.; a son, Lloyd Clay Woods of McCall, Idaho; five grandchildren, Courtney Lantto, Carter Cummings, Bailey Woods, Kyler Woods and Stefany Mahoney; and a great-grandchild, Ethan Lantto.

His parents, Lloyd and Maybell Woods; a sister, Helen Elizabeth Woods, and a brother, David Woods, are deceased.

The family suggests memorials to the South Plains Council of Boy Scouts, 30 Briercroft Office Park, Lubbock, TX 79412-3099; First Baptist Church or Plainview Meals on Wheels.
