Obituary

Lu Winkels Memorial services for Janie Lucretia "Lu" Winkels, 83, were at 11 a.m. today in First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Drew Travis, pastor, officiating. Cremation and interment in Plainview Memorial Park will be arranged at a later date by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. Mrs. Winkels died at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, in Plainview Healthcare Center. She was born Feb. 27, 1922, in Las Vegas, N.M., to Heber Gragg and Janie Reece Fudge Vaughan. Mrs. Winkels earned a BSBA degree in 1943 and an MS degree in business in 1948, both from the University of Arkansas. Following her graduation in 1943, during World War II she served as a teacher at the Jerome and Rohwer Relocation Centers in Arkansas and as executive secretary to the director of the Rohwer Relocation Center from 1944 until the end of the war. A lifelong teacher, she taught at the Anthony School in Little Rock, Ark., and upon her return to Plainview in 1968 taught kindergarten at Austin Heights, Lakeside and Edgemere, in addition to teaching in the migrant program during the summer for many years. She retired in 1988 and taught in the Adult Education Program in Plainview for more than 12 years. She continued to substitute and volunteer at the Plainview Adult Learning Center until her recent illness. Mrs. Winkels was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder, taught pre-school Sunday school, sang in the choir and served on the board of First Presbyterian Kindergarten. She was a member of Texas Retired Teachers, Texas Association of Adult Educators, reporter-historian for Kappa Kappa Iota national teachers sorority and a life member of the University of Arkansas Alumni Association. Mrs. Winkels was an active volunteer in the community for many years and received the Citizens Service Award in 2000 from the Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Richard Danielson of Plano and Stacy and Randy Ely of Tucson, Ariz.; a son and a daughter-in-law, Bill and Marcia Overby of Fayetteville, Ark.; and three grandchildren, Andrew Danielson and Ashley Danielson of Plano and Hank Overby of Fayetteville, Ark. Her husband, Ballard Winkels, and her beloved grandson, Jason Quisenberry, are deceased. The family suggests memorials to the Memorial Fund at First Presbyterian Church, 2101 Utica, Plainview, TX 79072.
