Obituary

Nancy Jean Whitfield, 78, of New Braunfels passed away Friday, Aug. 22, 2008. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today, Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, at First United Methodist Church Chapel in Plainview with the Rev. Jerry Moore officiating. Burial followed in Plainview Cemetery under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. Nancy was born Oct. 19, 1929, in Anna, Ill., to William and Ann Carter. She spent her childhood in Anna before moving to Plainview as a teenager. After high school, she acquired her undergraduate degree and eventually her doctorate in education and was a teacher and counselor. While in college, she was a member of the Tri Delta sorority. She was an educator for Plainview ISD, Midland ISD, Dallas ISD and, later, Ursalan Academy. She served on the social committee of every church she attended and loved her church work wherever she lived. She joined Sunday school classes, women's circles and was a part of the mission outreach programs. She married Whit Marion A. Whitfield on Oct. 21, 1950, in Clovis, N.M. Survivors include her husband, Whit Marion A. Whitfield of New Braunfels; two daughters, Marianne Carter of New Braunfels and Nancylee Staggs of Fort Worth; two sisters, Luan Haynes of Wimberly, Texas, and Sally Montgomery of Newport Richy, Fla.; two granddaughters, Sara Staggs of Chicago and Katy Staggs of Fort Worth; one great-granddaughter, Sophia Staggs of Fort Worth; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a baby daughter, Alice Lynn Whitfield. A visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday evening at Kornerstone Funeral Directors.
