Weil, Berthold Francis

Funeral Mass for Bert F. Weil, 80, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainview with the Rev. Jim McCartney, pastor of St. Alice Catholic Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Plainview by Freeman-Abell Funeral Home.

Mr. Weil died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at his residence.

He was born April 30, 1920, in Hale Center. He served with the U.S. Army during World War with a light tank unit. He was in battles for Slerno River and saw action for 15 weeks at Cassino, which included nine weeks without relief. He was promoted to sergeant and took command of his company. He was the Company D and all the men were from Texas so they called their company the Dallas Devil. They fought in Casa Blanca, Tunis, North Africa and Italy.

He retired from farming in 1961 while living in Dimmitt. He moved to Plainview and worked for international Harvester for 11 years in Earth and from 1973-1982 in Plainview. He moved to Hale Center in 1984.

He was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a member of St, Alice Catholic Church of Plainview.

On Feb. 17, 1952, he married Mary Frances Berlin in Plainview.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Donnie Weil of Arlington; a daughter , Deborah Perkey of Hale Center; two brothers, Leo Weil and Edward Weil both of Hale Center;, three sister, Patsy Craddick and Marie Byrd, both of Lubbock, and Louise Witkowski of Hereford; and seven grandchildren.
