Pioneer Plainsman Answers Last Call; Captain J.L. Vaughn Had Passed 3 Score and 10 Years; Masons to Conduct Funeral Services
Captain J.L. Vaughn died this morning at his home, on Highland Avenue. He was 71 year, 4 monts and 10 days old. He had been ill for sometime.
Captain Vaughn moved to Hale County about 18 years ago. He was a native of Missouri. After serving an enlistment in the Confederate army, he moved to Texas in 1862. His ventures in the cattle business on the South Plains proved profitable. When the Citizens? State Bank was organized, in 1906, Captain Vaughn became president.
The Citizens? State Bank consolidated with the Plainview Bank and Trust Company in 1908, under the name of The Citizens? Natioanl Bank. The President of the Citizens? State Bank became Vice President of the new institution. He retired from active connection with the Citizens? National Bank a little more than a year ago.
He was a member of the Methodist Church. He held positions of high honor in the Masonic Lodge.
Funeral services for Captain Vaughn will be held at 4 o?clock tomorrow afternoon, under the auspices of the Masonic Lodges. (Hale County Herald, July 11, 1913)

Home: From Hale County Historical Quarterly: Located at the corner of Restriction and White (present 601 West Eleventh) the house was build by Captain Vaughn in 1907. . . . The Vaughn home, designed by J.C. Goodwin and Build by E.L. Kerr and Son, was reportedly the first fully electrified home in Plainview.
