Obituary

John "Jack Knife" Vaughan, 75, of Plainview died on Thursday, May 20, 2010, in Plainview, Texas. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, May 24, 2010, at Plainview Family Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Doug Yates officiating. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, May 23, 2010, at Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. Mr. Vaughan was born Sept. 20, 1934 in Reed, Okla., to J.D. and Mable Smith Vaughan. He married Theta Hulett on July 23, 1993, in Plainview. He grew up in Oklahoma and graduated from high school in Vincent. He moved to Bovina, Texas, in the mid-1950s where he farmed. In 1969 he moved to Plainview and became a truck driver, driving for 40 years. He was baptized in Sulpher Missionary Baptist Church where he sang in a quartet. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion for 30 years and was the Boys State chairman sponsored by the American Legion. He loved gardening and growing things. He is survived by his wife, Theta Vaughan of Plainview; eight children, Janet Griffin of Childress, Texas, Jane Durham and husband Grady of Belton, Texas, Naoma Koenig and husband Leo of Amarillo, Texas, Michael Vaughan of Brooksville, Fla., Marilyn Reed and husband Robby of Woodward, Okla., Marsha Kearns and husband Ray of Shattuck, Okla., Melinda Rollins and husband Larry of Plainview, Texas, and Judy Woolverton and husband Tony of Sunrise Beach, Texas; one sister, Mary Steelman and husband Dick of Bovina, Texas; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Paul Vaughan and Joshua Ramsay; two great-grandchildren, Kelli Dawn Brewer and Rylee Dawn Cates; and a brother, Mark Vaughan.
