Obituary

Funeral services for William E. "Willie" Thurman, 79, will be at 10 a.m Saturday in Garland Street Church of Christ with Russell Harris, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park Cemetery by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. Mr. Thurman died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, in Covenant Hospital Plainview. He was born Aug. 13, 1926, in Terry County to James Earnest and Cora Lesley Thurman. He attended schools in Terry County where he graduated and attended a business school in Lubbock. He married Audrey Alyne Hodges on Sept. 2, 1945, in Brownfield. Mr. Thurman was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II and was in the occupational forces of Japan after the war. He moved to a farm in the Edmonson area in 1952 and moved to Plainview in 1960. He farmed all his life. He was a former deacon at Garland Street Church of Christ where he was a member. He was active in Farm Bureau, serving as president from 1964-66; a charter member of Edmonson Co-op; and he was honored as Outstanding Conservation Farmer in 1985. Survivors include one son, Bill Thurman Jr. of Kress; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda and Dave Rhoads of St. Louis, Mo., Janet and Roy Shrode of Midland and Nancy Quinn of Odessa; one sister, Irene Warren of Lubbock; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
