Obituary

Memorial services for Gary L. Thurman, 57, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Bartley Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Joe P. Weldon, pastor of South Plains Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Bartley Funeral Home. Mr. Thurman died Monday, July 26, 2004, in Covenant Hospital. He was born Feb. 2, 1947, in Clovis, N.M., where he grew up. He graduated from Pampa High School and received a degree in psychology from Texas Tech University in 1964. He worked as a police officer for the Lubbock Police Department from 1972 to 1982, in Dimmitt as chief of police from 1986 to 1993 and in Plainview served as director of Serenity House from 1994 to 1997. He purchased Cell Tone in 1997. He was a member of Parkview Baptist Church. On April 19, 1997, he married Deby Steindel in Plainview. Survivors include his wife; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ryan and Lupe Thurman and Scott Thurman, all of Amarillo; a daughter, Gina Thurman of Wellington, New Zealand; his mother, Margie Thurman of Plainview; and two grandchildren. His father, Delbert Thurman, died June 18, 1995.
