Funeral services for Elie Elgin (Buddy) Thurman, 66, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church with Dr. Max Browning, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home.
Mr. Thurman died at 1:58 p.m. Saturday, July 29, 2000, in the emergency room at Covenant Hospital Plainview after a heart attack at his residence.
He was born Sept. 13, 1933, in Haskell and spent his early years in Chillicothe. He moved to Hale County in 1943 and attended Hooper country school. He moved to Plainview in 1945 and graduated from Plainview High School in 1951.
He worked for W.T. Cain Motor Co. as a mechanic and body man. In 1956, he went to work for Winn Motor as a body man and after Jack Morris purchased the business, he worked as a mechanic. He had been service manager for Jack Morris Ford since 1977.
He was a pilot and earned commercial, instrument, multi-engine and sea plane ratings and loved to fly his Citabria. He was a member of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 302 in Conroe, held an Advanced Ham Radio License, WA5MES, and was a regular on the Northwest Texas Emergency Sunday morning net. He had been a licensed Scuba instructor with Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), had raced motorcycles, holding the amateur number of 25n, and was a spray pilot.
He had served in the National Guard for six years and was with the Army Reserves for four. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
On Nov. 12, 1952, he married Charlotte Florence Wimp in Swisher County.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Doug Edwards of Plainview; a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Cynthia Thurman of Plainview; and two grandchildren, Kimber Edwards and Ryan Edwards both of Plainview.
His parents E.E. Thurman Sr. and Edith Ledbetter Thurman McPherson, and a sister, Bettye Thurman Winton, are deceased.
Pallbearers will be Mike Hutcherson, Norman Stovall, Herman Lindeman, Danny Andrews, Doug McDonough, Ted Noel, Joe Rodriguez and Alfred Henderson. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Morris and Speedy Favila.
The family suggests Memorials to the American Heart Association or a favorite charity.
