Obituary

Funeral services for Virgil Harvey Thrift, 66, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Wood-Dunning Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Roger Foote, pastor of Northside Baptist Church, officiating. Burial with military graveside services will be in Plainview Memorial Park by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. Mr. Thrift died at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in Lubbock Health Care Center. He was born March 24, 1938, in Waycross, Ga. He served 26 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1980. He then moved to Plainview where he was supervisor of electronics at Excel Corporation, retiring in August 2003. He raised thoroughbred horses at his farm in Seth Ward and was a member of Texas Thoroughbred Horses Association and the Elks Lodge #1176. On Nov. 26, 1971, he married Gay Wynelle Parr in Plattsburgh, N.Y. Survivors include his wife; two daughters and sons-in-law, Oletha and William Pittman of Gray Court, S.C., and Donna and Ordman Alley of Beals, Maine; a brother, Eldred Thrift of Hinesville, Ga.; two sisters, Imagean Tatum of Waycross, Ga., and Alene Thrift of Jacksonville, Fla.; and four grandchildren. His parents, Harvey and Beulah Thrift; and a son, James, are deceased. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.
