PETERSBURG - Memorial services for Wayne Thorpe, 78, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sharon O?Quinn, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Olton, and the Rev. Ted Wilson, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Petersburg Cemetery by Lemons Funeral Home of Plainview.

Mr. Thorpe died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, in Petersburg.

He was born Aug. 12, 1921, in Petersburg where he grew up and graduated from high school. He attended Texas Tech and served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

He returned to Petersburg after his discharge and began working for Thorpe Cleaners. In 1949 he started farming, retiring in 1992.

He was a Master Mason and a member of Floydada Lodge No. 712. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

On March 23, 1945, he married Jean Hagood in Petersburg. She died Nov. 9, 1990.

Survivors include his mother, Lottie Thorpe of Lubbock; a daughter and son-in-law, Jann and Bill Rowell of Houston; a son and daughter-in-law, Jearl and Helen Thorpe of Lubbock; two grandchildren, Landon Thorpe of Lubbock and Grace Thorpe of Georgetown; and two nieces, Kim Newman of Brady and Gwyn Heflin of San Angelo.

Pallbearers will be Chuck Allmon, Lynn Culp, Eddie Fullingim, Jayson Culp, Don Kelley, Butch Finker, Kyle Robertson, Kim Porter and Domingo Castilleja. Honorary pallbearers will be Harry McDaniel, Gene Fullingim, Shorty Robertson, H.L. Porter, Delbert Williams and Loy Wylie.
