Obituary

RED OAK - Funeral services for Emery Rodelbert "Roe" Strother Sr., 82, former longtime Plainview resident, were at 6 p.m. today in Orvilla Church of Christ. Another service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Garland Street Church of Christ in Plainview. Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery by Red Oak Funeral Home in Red Oak. Mr. Strother died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, in Dallas after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 31, 1919, in Saginaw in Tarrant County, the seventh son of Arthur and Maggie Joe Black Strother Sr. He grew up in Titus County, Okla., and Ropesville, Texas where he graduated from high school. After serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps in England and France during World War II, he worked in Cheyenne, Wyo., and in the Dallas area. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Plainview and was owner of Strother Flowers and Gifts. He moved to Ellis County in 1997. He was a deacon at Garland Street Church of Christ and helped establish the Church of Christ in Creed, Colo. He also was a Toastmaster. On July 22, 1951, he married Opal Botts in Plainview. Survivors include his wife; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lavica and Lanny Anderson of Odessa and Alice and Larry Lane of Glen Heights; a son and daughter-in-law, Emery Jr., and Shela Strother of Fort Stockton; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Six brothers are deceased.
