HALE CENTER - Graveside services for Melvin Clarence Stephens, 91, of Temple, former Hale Center resident, will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Hale Center Cemetery with Matt Swanson, minister of the Hale Center Church of Christ, officiating. Arrangements are by Freeman-Abell Funeral Home. Mr. Stephens died Monday, July 15, 2002, in Southland Villa Nursing Center in Temple. He was born Feb. 17, 1911, in Montague County. He moved to Hale Center in 1926 where he owned and operated Hale Center Garage. He moved to Temple in 1995. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, was a member of Hale Center Church of Christ and attended Canyon Creek Church of Christ in Temple. He was a member of Woodmen of the World and participated in the Hale Center Senior Citizens. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. On Jan. 24, 1943, he married Pauline McCarver in Hollis, Okla. Survivors include his wife; one daughter and son-in-law, Freddie Mae and Ronald Neal Heuss of Temple; three sisters, Zelma Davis of Houston and Geneva Bearden and Goldie Hillman, both of Hale Center; a granddaughter, Jennifer Heuss of Lubbock; an adopted granddaughter, Cynthia Sue Schwenker of Alpharetta, Ga.; and two adopted great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials to the Hale Center Senior Citizens, P.O. Box 205, Hale Center, TX 79041.
