Obituary

Kathryn "Kate" Smith, 96, formerly of Plainview, died Sunday, Dec. 7, in Lubbock. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, in the Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel in Plainview. A private burial was held Thursday, Dec. 11. Kate was born to Fred and Mary Evelyn (Dewitt) Hunterman on Aug. 31, 1918, in Moran, Texas. She graduated from Cisco High School in 1935 and from Scoggins Beauty School in Abilene in 1941. She worked at Jewel's Beauty Shop in Cisco until she married. Prior to attending beauty school, she worked in a variety store in Albany where she met her future husband. Kate married R. Morris Smith on Aug. 2, 1942, in Cisco. He preceded her in death on June 22, 2003. They resided in Fort Worth until Morris entered the U.S. Navy in 1944. Upon his discharge in 1946, they returned to Fort Worth briefly before moving to Plainview. Kate was a homemaker and an accomplished seamstress. When Morris purchased Rockwell Lumber Company in 1979, Kate helped him with bookkeeping. She was a member of Plainview First Baptist Church. Kate was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, R. Morris Smith; a daughter Carol Ann Smith Elliott; an infant granddaughter Amy Elliott; and two sisters, Helen Hodges and Marie Price. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and David True of Lubbock; son-in-law Bill Elliott of Fredericksburg; grandchildren Laura Theis (David) of Boerne, Patrick Elliott (Jayne) of Fredericksburg, Blaine True (Jennifer) of Waxahachie, and Larissa True Plumlee (Eric) of Cortland, New York; great-granddaughter Elliott Theis of Boerne; several nieces and a nephew. Mrs. Smith has been a resident of SouthHaven Assisted Living in Lubbock since 2003, where she was lovingly cared for by the aides and staff. The family wishes to extend their appreciation for the care Kate received over the past 11 years.
