Obituary

J.A. Smith, 90, Succumbs Here
The already depleted ranks of veterans of the Civil War were thinned again last night with the passing of J.A. Smith, 90, at the home of his son, C.G. Smith, with whom he had lived for several months.
Funeral services are to be held Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o?clock at the First Methodist Church here with Rev. E.B. Fincher, Amarillo, and Rev. C.R. Hooton of Plainview, officiating. Burial will be here under direction of the W.H. Lindsey Funeral Home.
Joseph Andrew Smith was born on March 7, 1847, in Cop8iah County, Mississippi, where, 22 years later, he and Miss Martha Ann Bell were married. She preceded him in death by a little more than a year. Only a few months before her death they had celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Sixth Mississippi Regiment, Lowery?s Brigade, Loren?s Division of the Confederate army. He came to Williamson County, Texas, in 1891. Later he lived in San Angelo, Friona, and Amarillo. He had been a member of the Methodist church since boyhood and obtained a license to preach 40 years ago.
Five sons, one daughter, twenty-three grandchildren, and twenty-eight great-grandchildren survive. The daughter is Mrs. Viola M? of Amarillo, and the sons are C.G., W.M., A.J., B.A., and T.W. Smith, all of Plainview. Mr. and Mrs. Smith also reared nine other children. (February 8, 1937)
