Obituary

PETERSBURG - Funeral services for Laura Smith, 79, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sharon Wiese, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Olton, and the Rev. Jim Teeter, pastor of St. Paul?s United Methodist Church in Pampa, officiating. Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery by Lemons Funeral Home of Plainview. Mrs. Smith died at 1:05 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, in Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. She was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Iowa Park. She moved to Petersburg where she grew up and attended school. She was assistant manager of White?s Auto in Petersburg for nine years and also worked for many years for the Air Force Commissary System. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of Plains Ramblers RV
Club, First United Methodist Church, J.O.Y. Sunday School Class and of United Methodist Women since 1971. On Jan. 22, 1953, she married Haskell Smith in Lubbock. Survivors include her husband; a son, William T. of Shallowater; three brothers, Bud T. Thompson of Olton, J.C. Thompson of Petersburg and Donald Thompson of San Angelo; two sisters, Lucille Oden of Earth and Betty Motley of Olton; and one grandchild. One grandchild, two brothers and one sister are deceased. The family suggests memorials to Petersburg?s First United Methodist Church General Fund. Family members will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
