Obituary

Mavis Melissa Caffey Slaughter, 98, died Monday, April 6, 2015, in San Angelo. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday April 8, 2015, at Plainview Memorial Park under the personal direction of Lemons Funeral Home in Plainview. Mavis was born in Big Sandy, Texas, on Feb. 11, 1917, to Edwin Steman Caffey and Effie Ann Elder Caffey. When she was 4, Mavis' family moved to Seagraves, Texas, where she lived until after her marriage. She married Homer Slaughter in 1936, and they lived and worked 44 happy years together before he died in December 1980. Mavis and Homer moved to Dublin, Texas, in 1948, to Lovington, New Mexico, in 1949, and then to Olton, Texas, in 1950 where they ranched and farmed until retirement. On retiring they moved near Plainview and raised pecans until Homer's death. After her husband's death, Mavis moved into Plainview then to Brownfield and then to San Angelo to be near her twin sister Mary Horner, nieces and nephew. Mavis was a long time member of the Garland Street Church of Christ and later the Brownfield Church of Christ. Mavis was preceded in death by her husband Homer; her parents; three brothers and three sisters. The family is extremely grateful to the Division 1 Employees of Baptist Retirement Community for the wonderful care they provided for Mavis. Survivors include nephew, Don Horner and wife, Karen; nieces, Ellan Kirkland and Maxie McCracken all of San Angelo, niece, Melinda Dragomer of Santa, Anna, California, and many other nieces and nephews.
