Obituary

Odis V. Sims Jr., 86, of Plainview died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006, at his residence. Odis and Edith have lived in Plainview since 1965. Services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 30, 2006, at the First Baptist Church Sanctuary. Officiating will be Dr. Travis Hart, pastor of First Baptist Church, and Gene Meacham, director of missions of Caprock Plains Baptist Association. Burial will be at Parklawn Memorial Gardens by Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. Mr. Sims was born Oct. 24, 1920, in Crosbyton. He was the son of the late Odis V. Sr. and Iona Sims. He graduated from Slaton High School in 1938 and attended Buffalo University in Buffalo, N.Y. He married Edith Rieff in Lubbock, Texas, on Sept. 1, 1946. Odis was a career pilot, serving in the United States Air Force from 1940 until his retirement in 1965 with a rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His second career, lasting 26 years, was in the banking business with City National, First National and Norwest Banks. Mr. Sims a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club and was presented the George F. Hixson Fellow Award in September 2000. In October 2002, he was presented the Chamber of Commerce Citizens Service Award. The Plainview Daily Herald recognized him as the Most Patriotic in Plainview. In association with the American Cancer Society, he established and was chairman of the Road to Recovery Program. For his unselfish service, he was awarded the Cotton Baron Award. He was past president of the Plainview Chapter of the American Red Cross. He also served as the treasurer for Caprock Plains Baptist Association for more than 20 years and was assistant treasurer for First Baptist Church of Plainview. Odis was serving as a trustee of the Fred and Louise Joachim Foundation and was a deacon of First Baptist Church of Hale Center and an active deacon of First Baptist Church of Plainview. He was a member of the American Legion, the Air Force Association and the Retired Officers Association. Survivors include his wife, Edith Sims of Plainview; sisters and brothers-in-law, Naomi Weathers, Opal and George Barnes, Mildred and A.W. (Bub) Hammitt, Ruby Teeter and Henry and Eloise Rieff; 19 nephews and nieces; 41 great-nephews and nieces; and many great-great-nephews and nieces. Visitation for family and friends will be from 2-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006, at Kornerstone Funeral Directors. Memorials may be made to your favorite charity.
