Obituary

Kathleen (Padgett) Shockley, 84, of Plainview, was reunited with the love of her life, Gilbert Padgett, on Tuesday, Jan, 10, 2006, while held in the arms of her loved ones. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, in Lemons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bentley Gwyn officiating. Interment will follow in Plainview Memorial Park. Kathleen was born Nov. 18, 1921, to Frederick and Alice Barker Cotton in Baldock, England, where she was raised with her two sisters and three brothers. On Aug. 20, 1943, she married Gilbert Padgett of Hale Center and came to the United States aboard the Queen Mary to live with his family while he finished his Air Force service during World War II. Not yet 22, it took a massive amount of courage for her to board that ship, during a time of uncertainty and war, to leave her family for a foreign country. Soon after Gilbert came home from the war, the first of their two girls, June Kay, was born. Nine years later, Shirley Kathleen came along. In 1961, Gilbert passed away and Kathleen assumed the huge responsibility of raising the two girls on her own. Shortly thereafter, she moved to Plainview where she worked at Edgemere Elementary Cafeteria as well as Mrs. Camp's Pastries. Kathleen never had a driver's license, so she transported herself by bicycle. She devoted her life to her family, always giving of herself to put her family first. She was a loyal friend and a very strong lady. Beloved Mum, Nan and Great Nana, Kathleen is survived by her two daughters, June Kay Haley and husband Kent of Coto De Caza, Calif., and Shirley Kathleen Jackson and husband Gary of Plainview; four grandchildren, Angela Haley of El Segundo, Calif., Chad Haley of Ladera Ranch, Calif., Nicole Jackson of Littlefield, Texas, and Colin Jackson of Fort Hood, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Andrew Carlson, Chad Haley II and Faith Haley, all of California; one brother, Derrick Cotton of Cornwall, England; one sister, Rose Gallagher of Biggleswade, England; and numerous nieces and nephews. As your loved ones held your hands while you walked to the gates of Heaven, you imparted great strength upon your family, and we feel greatly blessed that we were allowed this honor. The love and strength you carried in your heart was passed to us so that we can now continue your legacy.
