Services for Royse L. Shires, 81, of Abernathy will be at 2 p.m. today in Abernathy First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jackie White, pastor of Church on the Rock in Lubbock, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home of Abernathy.

Shires died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998, at Lubbock's Methodist Hospital.

He was born April 9, 1917. He married Agness Baker on Feb. 20, 1937, in Lubbock. He moved to Abernathy from California in 1964. He was a carrier for the Abernathy post office from 1968 until retiring in 1985. He owned Abernathy Laundry. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of the American Legion and Abernathy Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Abernathy First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Garald Shires of Elgin, Ill.; a daughter, Glenda Jones of Lubbock; three brothers, Burney Shires of Amarillo, Dick Shires of Olympia, Wash., and Gayle Shires of Meadview, Ariz.; a sister, Lynda Wilkerson of Prescott, Ariz.; three grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
