Obituary

Services for longtime Church of Christ minister and area farmer Hubert E. Setliff will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, in the 11th and Amarillo Church of Christ in Plainview with Dee Teel, evangelist, and Gerald Bedwell and Elgin Conner officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. The angels came and carried our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle into our Heavenly Father's loving arms on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005. "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness . . " II Tim. 4:7-8 KJV. Hubert had spent his life "planting his own garden and decorating his own soul instead of waiting for others to bring him flowers." He spent his life serving his God and other people. The last few years had been a hard struggle for him, but he never lost his faith or love for his God and his family. Born April 28, 1914, in Creta, Okla., as a very young man he moved with his parents to Turkey, Texas. He married Dale Morrison on Nov. 26, 1936, at the Briscoe County Courthouse in Silverton, Texas. They shared almost 68 years of marriage with Dale preceding him in death in September 2004. He farmed near Quitaque and Turkey until moving his family to Plainview in January 1948 where he farmed for many years until ill health forced him to retire. During the years of farming he also held regular preaching appointments throughout West Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. He was ordained a minister of the Church of Christ by the Quitaque congregation on May 29, 1949, although he had been teaching God's Word since the age of 18. He served as a deacon at the 11th and Amarillo Church of Christ for a number of years before being ordained an elder in 1979. During the course of his ministry, he performed more than 80 wedding ceremonies, numerous baptisms and presided over countless funerals. In some cases he provided these services for several generations of the same families. He was as near as a phone call for anyone in need; at times leaving his own sickbed to help someone in distress. People came for many miles seeking his advice because of his wisdom. He will be sorely missed by a multitude of people who knew and loved him. He is survived by two daughters, Martha Rhoades and husband, Kenneth, and Myra Booth Reece and husband, Tommy, all of Lubbock; six grandchildren, Kenny and Kandice Rhoades of Lubbock, Kayla Fambrough and husband, Larry, of Angleton, Charla Nicholson and husband, Jeremy, Justin and Lannon Booth of Lubbock; four great-grandchildren, Emily, Jeb and Cole Fambrough and Nathan Booth; two sisters, Cloie Stephens of Amarillo and Dorris Babb of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife; parents, George and Minnie Setliff; four brothers, George, Odell, Arvill and Walter; four sisters, Ruby, Evelyn, Marline and Gladys; and a son-in-law, Gene Booth. God answered your prayer to be able to take care of Mother until He was ready for her so take your sweet rest now. You have surely earned it. We will always love you and miss you, but you and Mother will always live in our hearts. Memorials may be made to The American Heart Association,, The American Cancer Society, Alzheimer's Research, ALS Research, VistaCare Family Hospice, or 11th and Amarillo Church of Christ Building Fund. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-8 p.m. today.
