Obituary
Services for Shirley Irene Saxon, 86, will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Drew Travis, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Plainview Memorial Park by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. She died at 1:50 p.m. Friday, Oct, 14, 2005, at Lubbock Heart Hospital. Shirley was born May 7, 1919, in the community of Running Water where she graduated. She attended Wayland Baptist University where she played basketball. On June 19, 1937, she married Ralph Gunter in Clovis, N.M., and into that union a daughter, Patricia, was born. They lived in San Diego for 10 years then returned to Plainview where they lived until she lost her husband to death in 1975. She later married Hugh Saxon in 1976 in Plainview. He died Aug. 16, 1998. Shirley loved her church and in her young years she led singing for the Edmonson and Running Water Baptist churches. At the little church of Valley View, she taught Sunday school class and Vacation Bible School. She later joined the First Methodist Church with Hugh and attended Wesley Class where she served as secretary for a number of years and was president and vice president. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Larry Walter of Plainview; two brothers, Harold Tipton of El Cajon, Calif., and L.C. Tipton of La Mesa, Calif.; one sister, Wynell Boodwin of Spring Valley, Calif.; two grandsons, Bryan and wife Cyndy Walter and Blake and Kember Walter, all of Plainview; and four great-great-grandsons, Chase, Hayden, Rainey and Ryder Walter of Plainview. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church or a favorite charity.
