Obituary
Funeral services for Grace Roney will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Max Browning officiating and the Rev. Jimmy Cameron assisting. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. A family visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Sept. 17, 2014, at the funeral home. Grace Evelyn Fischer was born on Dec. 29, 1925, to Robert and Ethel Fischer in Baltimore, Md. She married Ben Roney on April 27, 1944, in Baltimore before he left for France during WWII. Grace worked at Martin U.S.A. in Baltimore that manufactured aircraft for the war, and she drove a sidecar motorcycle out to certain locations where she was responsible for identifying all incoming aircraft. She then moved to Hale Center with her husband Ben when he returned from the war. He preceded her in death on Dec. 6, 1997. He was a successful farmer in Hale County. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hale Center, where she loved serving the Lord in various capacities. She served as the children's Sunday school director, vacation Bible school director, chairwoman of the Christmas dinner for many years and the appointee of the Regional Methodist Church Convention. She was elected a member of church building committee, serving as a secretary one year, member of Council Ministries three years, chairwoman of Worship Committees two years and chairwomen of Education Committee one year. She served for nine years on the Hale Center School Board, and secretary four years, being the first woman elected to serve. She served nine years in PTA, was president three years and vice president for two years, was a member of the Pioneer Study Club, serving as president and all other positions. She was a Library Board member as well. She was a member of the Hale Center Band Boosters Club for 11 years, serving as secretary for four years. She was also a member of the Plainview Women's Forum. She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one sister, Jane Karbowniczek. She is survived by a son, John of Hale Center; two daughters, Anita Slape and husband Jimmy of Levelland, and Cynthia Bain and husband Ken of Duncanville; five grandchildren, Brad Slape and wife Brittany of Levelland, Amanda Martin and husband T.J. of Lubbock, Ben Bain and wife Misty of Duncanville, Brian Bain and wife Hailey of Dallas, and Brandon Bain of Duncanville; six great-grandchildren, Destinee, Danielle and Brooklyn Slape of Levelland; Haydn Dukatnik of Lubbock and Austin and Benjamin Bain of Duncanville.
