Obituary
Wilma Pope, 92, of Abernathy, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, Feb. 2, 2013, surrounded by her children. She was born May 21, 1920, to Ralph and Agnes (Vernon) Motheral in Olustee, Okla. The Motheral family moved to the Cooper community when Wilma was young, then on to Abernathy, where she graduated from Abernathy High School in 1938. She met and married her classmate and love of her life, E.J. Pope, on Dec. 23, 1938. They were engaged in farming except for the years E.J. served in the Army during WWII. Wilma moved her two young sons to California to be close to E.J.'s base. She was a devoted Christian wife and mother and lifetime member of the Church of Christ in Abernathy. Wilma is preceded in death by her husband, E.J., her parents Ralph and Agnes Motheral, two sisters, Imogene Shires and Wynelle Pope, and one brother, Bill Motheral. Wilma is survived by three children, sons, Charles and Milton (Angela) and daughter Karen Waits, all of Abernathy, 10 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, three brothers, Donald (Billie) of Kress, Texas, and Lawrence and R K. (P.J.) of Palestine, Texas. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 5, 2013, in the Church of Christ in Abernathy with David Bennett officiating. Visitation was held at Abell Funeral Home from 6-7 p.m. Monday. Burial will follow in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Abernathy. The family suggests memorials be sent to the Abernathy Church of Christ, the Abernathy Cemetery Association or to the Children's Home of Lubbock.
