Obituary

Virgil Phillips, 87, of Plainview passed away on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, in Lubbock. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at the Family Life Center Chapel of the First Baptist Church with Dr. Tim Marrow officiating. Burial will follow in Abernathy Cemetery under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, at the funeral home. Mr. Phillips was born on June 24, 1925, in Abernathy, Texas, to Charles and Flossie Phillips. He grew up and attended schools in Abernathy. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He worked on the family farm and farmed his whole life. He also owned and operated a ranch in Honey Grove, Texas, and a peanut farm in Paris, Texas. He retired from farming in 1995. He was a very giving person and supported many causes over the years. He loved to travel and take bus tours. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Plainview and also a member of the Beef Master's Association. Virgil was preceded in death by his first wife, Elouise Stambaugh. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Joanna Myers; a son, Jim Myers Smith; daughter, Belynda Ann Carr; parents, Charles and Flossie Phillips; and three brothers, Cecil, Bryan and Carl Phillips. Survivors include three daughters, Janice Phillips Wade and husband Lane of Richmond, Texas, Lynne Phillips Matlock and husband Sam of Tulia, and Kim McCarrell and husband Garvin of Colorado Springs, Colo.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Taylor of Marble Falls. The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church or Cal Farley's Boys Ranch.
