Aged Confederate Veteran Succumbs to Attack of Flu
Mathew T. Moore, aged Confederate veteran, succumbed to an attack of influenza at his home six miles north of Plainview at two thirty Wednesday morning. He was eight-three years old at the time of his death.
Mr. Moore was born in Fort Gaines, Georgia, November 12, 1842. In early life he moved with his parents to Abbeville, Alabama, where he grew to manhood. In 1861 he joined Company B of the Sixth Regiment of the Confederate forces under Captain Lightfoot. He served four years and was with General Lee when he surrendered at Appomattox, November 2, 1865.
Mr. Moore was married to Miss Nellie McCoy. This union was blessed with eight children, five of whom are still living: Mrs. H.H. Stuckey, Plainview, E.O. Moore of Corpus Christi, C.O. Moore of Waco, M.C. Moore of Amarillo and D.G. Moore of Plainview. Four of the children were at their father?s bedside when he died.
Mr. Moore moved to Texas in 1872 and to Hale County about six years ago. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church, a true Christian gentleman loved by all his friends.
The funeral services were conducted by Elder J.L. Bolinger of Cone, Texas, at the Church of Christ at four o?clock Wednesday afternoon. Hew was laid to rest in the Plainview cemetery by the side of his wife who died two years ago. The interment was directed by the Plainview Undertaking Company.
Active pall bearers were J.H. McCain, H.K. Hartley, M.E. England, Nath Burkett, W.W. Dandy and B.T. Wells.
Honorary pall bearers were: Dr. J.R. Knight, W.F. Hill, G.W. Hay, T. Page, R.B. Morton, W.F. Moon, E. Hay, and L.L. Stewart.
