Obituary

Funeral services for Doris Meriwether, 80, will be at 10 a.m. Monday in First Christian Church with the Rev. Jim Woodworth, an associate minister of First Christian Church in Lubbock, Dr. Travis Hart, pastor of First Baptist Church, and the Rev. Mary Lou Dillon, pastor of First Christian Church, officiating Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park by Lemons Funeral Home. Mrs. Meriwether died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, in Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. She was born July 7, 1921, in Lockney and married George Thomas Meriwether Jr. there on Oct. 30, 1943. He died July 4, 1955. She graduated from Lockney High School in 1939 and attended Wayland Baptist College. She was a secretary for the Texas Education Agency for 17 years. She was a member of First Christian Church where she served as church secretary and deaconess. She also served in the department of education, stewardship, world outreach, property committee and was a member of the church board for many years. She was a hospice volunteer and was a hospital auxiliary Pink Lady. She was a member of the board of Christian Manor retirement center from its inception in 1972 until retiring from the board in 1997. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Rick Kuykendall of Lake Charles, La.; a son and daughter-in-law, George and Debbie Meriwether of Plainview; a brother, J.D. "Jimmie" Sams of Plainview; and two grandsons, Tom Meriwether of Houston and Jay Meriwether of Lubbock. The family suggests memorials to First Christian Church or the PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) Foundation, 4901 Main Street, Suite 200, Kansas City, Mo. 64112.
