Obituary

ABERNATHY - Funeral Mass for Antonio N. Mendez, 96, was at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in St. Isidore Catholic Church with Rev. Luis Dussan, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Abernathy Cemetery by Abell Funeral Home. Mr. Mendez died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2001, at his residence. He was born Jan. 31, 1905 in Edinburg. He moved to Lubbock County in 1950 and had been an Abernathy resident for the past 45 years. He was a retired farmer. In 1932, he married Juanita Zamora. She died in 1974. Survivors include three sons, Nicanor Z. Mendez of Lubbock, Humberto Z. Mendez of Abernathy and George Z. Mendez of Houston; five daughters, Hortencia Valle of Desplains, Ill., Teresa Mendez and Armandina Fuentes, both of Abernathy, and Julia Olivares and Erlinda Santoy, both of San Antonio; 47 grandchildren; and 80 great-grandchildren. Five children are deceased.
