Obituary

Dewey Melton, 90, of Plainview passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, in Plainview. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, in the Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel with Wayne Horton, minister of Cactus Drive Church of Christ in Levelland, officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. A visitation will be from 6:30-7:30 p.m. today, Nov. 17, 2009, at the funeral home. Dewey was born Sept. 13, 1919, in Marietta, Texas, to Robert and Avis Melton. He grew up in Memphis, Texas, and graduated from Memphis High School in 1939. He worked for two years before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941. He served during WW II in the Pacific Theater. After his service to his country, he returned and lived in the Northern Panhandle and worked for the gas company for a couple of years. He married Odena Yarbrough on Jan. 1, 1946, in Plainview. They moved to Plainview in 1949 to farm. He retired from farming in 2002. He was a member of Ninth and Columbia Church of Christ. Dewey was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Avis Melton; a brother, Alvis Melton; and a sister, Glenna Mae. Survivors include his wife, Odena Melton of Plainview; three sons, Gary Melton of Lubbock, Weldon Melton and his wife, Judy, of Plainview and Kenny Melton and his wife, Shelley, of Lubbock; seven grandchildren, Rob Melton, Ryan Melton, Jared Melton, Kimberlea Brandon, Erin Melton, Bailey Melton and Tucker Melton; and seven great-grandchildren.
