Obituary

Bobby J. McWhorter, 78, of Plainview passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2009, in the Runningwater Draw Care Center in Olton. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2009, in Family Life Chapel at First Baptist Church with Dr. Travis Hart officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. Mr. McWhorter was born Dec. 2, 1930, in Megargel, Texas, to Tilman and Fay McWhorter. He grew up there and received his G.E.D. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea. After returning home he moved to Plainview in 1962. He was a barber until retiring in 1997. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he also served as a deacon. He also was a member of the Lions Club and was a past president. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Jerrene McWhorter; and three brothers, Gene, Kenneth and Boyd McWhorter. He married Peggy Atkins on Nov. 27, 1980, in Plainview. Survivors include his wife, Peggy McWhorter of Olton; five children, Eddie McWhorter, Dale McWhorter, Mark Finley, Cheryl Wolhar and Charlie Finley; two sisters, Peggy Hubbard and Doris Cashen; eight grandchildren; and five great-gandchildren. The family suggests memorials to the Lions Club.
