Obituary

Viola Reese McSwain, 90, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010, in Plainview. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010, at the First Baptist Church Chapel. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the direction of Wood Dunning Funeral Home. Mrs. McSwain was born in Aspermont, Texas, on Nov. 16, 1919. She attended Plainview public schools and the Plainview Business School before going to work for Cave's Five and Dime. She met and married S.B. McSwain after a one-year courtship in 1939. S.B. always said, "I met my million dollar baby in a five- and ten-cent store." They had three daughters: Beverly, Janice and Joyce. Viola worked along with her husband in the theatre business in Morrilton, Ark., until he began his tour of duty in WWII. Following the war, they settled in Plainview and ran the Caramel Crisp and later the Hilton Drugstore. Viola was an active member of First Baptist Church and the Hargrove Sunday School Class. Mrs. McSwain was preceded in death by her husband, S.B.; parents, Viola and W.H. Reese; four brothers; and six sisters. Mrs. McSwain is survived by Beverly and Ted Sanders of Plainview, Janice and Wendell Rowland of Tyler and Joyce and Ernest Shugart of Austin; grandchildren, Audrey Wright of Texarkana, Drew and Angie Sanders of Overland Park, Kan., April and Matthew Helm of Champaign, Ill., Tony and Schelli Sanders of Elgin, Ill., Caleb and Bonnie Rowland of Jacksonville, Fla., Betsy Rowland of Santa Barbara, Calif., Melissa and Mason Lincoln of Round Rock, Texas, and Scott and Ginger Bryant of Bastrop, Texas; great-grandchildren, Geoffrey and Garrett Wright of Texarkana, Ark., Linley and Janna Sanders of Overland Park, Kan., Kyleakin and Cambrian Helm of Champaign, Ill., Jack and Lexie Sanders of Elgin, Ill., and Makayla and Deklin Bryant of Bastrop, Texas; a brother-in-law, Foster McSwain Jr.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Love and appreciation to the staff of Prairie House for their dedicated love and care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the ALS Foundation at 1275 K Street NW, Suite 1050, Washington, DC 20005; or a charity of your choice.
