Geneva Shugart was born Dec. 25, 1921, in El Dorado, Okla. She is the first of eight children born to John Elbert and Etta Mae (Scroggins) Shugart. The farming family moved to Quanah in 1925, to Turkey in 1933 and to Plainview in 1936. Geneva met and fell in love with the handsome boy on the next farm, Orval McGuire. They were married Oct. 30, 1937, in Plainview. Orval and Geneva farmed for many years. They also owned and operated the Plainview Hatchery in the 1940s-50s. In 1959, they moved to the house Orval built on the farm northeast of Plainview. The house was moved into town in 1983. They retired from farming in 1974. Geneva was a true helpmate for Orval over the years. She had the gift of hospitality and greeted everyone at the door with "Would you like something to eat?" No one ever went away from her table hungry. She canned food, sewed clothes and quilts. She always had meals ready for Orval when he came in from plowing. Geneva joined the Church of the Nazarene after her marriage in 1937. She taught the kindergarten Sunday school class for more then 20 years. She also helped with church socials and funeral dinners, where her pies were in high demand Orval and Geneva moved to an assisted living facility in San Antonio in 2009 to be near their daughter. Geneva was preceded in death by her husband, Orval; her parents, J.E. and Etta Shugart; two sisters, Bobbie Thornton and Netha Reeves, and two brothers, Roy and Melvin Shugart.
