The family moved to Floydada, Texas, when he was 12 years old. They moved to Halfway, Texas, in 1930 and Liberty community north of Plainview, Texas, in 1932. He has been a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Plainview since 1932. Orval farmed most of his life. He helped with the family farm growing up, which included picking cotton by hand and plowing with the horses, Bay and Black, and later tractors. He retired from farming in 1974. He met and fell in love with Geneva Shugart, whose family lived on the next farm. They married on Oct. 30, 1937, in Plainview.

Orval and Geneva owned and operated the Plainview Hatchery in the 1940s to '50s. It was located on the south side of the courthouse square in downtown Plainview. They bought fertilized eggs from local farmers, incubated, hatched and sold the chicks. In 1959, Orval and his father, W.W. McGuire, built the family a new home on the farm northeast of Plainview. In 1983, the house was moved into town at 2005 Dimmitt Road. Orval and Geneva lived in the house for 50 years before moving into assisted living in San Antonio in 2009. Orval also was talented in working with wood, machinery, welding and anything else that needed doing on the farm. Orval and Geneva spent their retirement years playing with grandchildren, traveling in their RV and gardening.
