Charles Frederick Mathews, Ph.D., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009. Dr. Mathews was born in Bangs, Texas, to Charlie and Vera Mathews on June 19, 1915. He was the captain and commanding officer of U.S.S.S.C. 774 in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. Mathews received his bachelor of arts degree from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, his master of education degree from the University of Texas at Austin and his doctorate of education from Texas Tech University. He was selected as the first Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Education at Texas Tech University in 1977. Mathews retired Dec. 31, 1985, after serving public education in Texas for more than 50 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Austin, teaching Sunday school in Austin, Longview and Plainview. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Justin Matthew Hahn; a sister, Goldie Woolverton; and his brother, Quinten Snow Mathews. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Anita Mathews of Lewisville; daughters, Carol Hahn and her husband, B.J., of Orange, Texas; Michele Russell and her husband, Craig, of Coppell, Texas; a granddaughter, Shannon Woolard; grandsons, Garrett Hahn and Kirk Russell; and two great-granddaughters.
