Obituary

Funeral services for Jerald R. Martin, 79, were held at 10:30 a.m. today in First Baptist Church Chapel with Dr. Travis Hart, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Parklawn Memorial Gardens by Kornerstone Funeral Directors. Mr. Martin had been in failing health several years and passed away suddenly at 10:50 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2005, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. He was born March 19, 1926, in the Pecan Grove community near Gatesville. After graduation from Gatesville High School, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Clara V. Bannister on Oct. 16, 1948. The Martins moved to Plainview in 1952. Mr. Martin was a well known masonry contractor in the South Plains area for more than 40 years until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Plainview, American Legion and the Gideon Association. Survivors include his wife; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Mike Harder of Plainview; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry D. and Lynn Rader Martin of Longview; five grandchildren, Amy and husband Brent McGavock and Jordan and wife Ashley Harder of Lubbock, Andy and wife Ashley Harder of Dallas, Emily Martin of Dallas and Laura Martin of Lubbock; and one great-grandchild, Caroline McGavock of Lubbock. He was preceded in death by his father, Marteen Martin in 1956; his stepfather, W.H. Clark in 1991; and his mother, Monette Clark in 1999. The family suggests memorials to Exodus Prison Ministry, in care of First Baptist Church, 205 W. Eighth, or the Senior Citizens Center of Plainview, 1107 Smyth, both in Plainview, TX 79072.
