Obituary
Funeral services for Thelma Thomas Manges, 105, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Wood-Dunning Colonial Chapel with Colquitt Nash, minister of Ninth and Columbia Church of Christ, and Dee Martin, an elder, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. Mrs. Manges, who was believed to be the oldest person in Hale County at the time of her death, died at 10:45 a.m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, in Plainview Healthcare Center. She was born Sept. 27, 1899, in Killeen, the daughter of Henderson L. and Lydia Breedlove Thomas. At age 16, she moved with her family from Bell County to Oklahoma Territory in a covered wagon. After several years, the family moved to Portales, N.M., where she graduated from high school. She later taught school. In 1921, she married Mickel David "Dave" Manges in Portales and they moved to Plainview. He owned and operated Dave's Wrecking Yard and Used Car Lot. He was joined in the business by his son, Guy, and it became Manges Motor Co. Mrs. Manges remained active living at Christian Manor where she was a relief manager for many years. She later became a resident of Heritage Nursing Home, now Plainview Healthcare Center, where she helped other residents as long as she could. She was active until her late 80s and a faithful member of Ninth and Columbia Church of Christ. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Jimmie Black of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; a daughter-in-law, Clarisse Manges of Plainview; two grandsons, Guy David Manges Jr., of Lubbock and James David Black of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a granddaughter, Guy-Lynn Black Paugh of Atlanta, Ga., and a stepgranddaughter, Randee Hart Teykl of Rosenburg; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and two step-great-granddaughters and four step-great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1971; and two sons, Guy David Manges in 1999 and Gay Manges in 1934, a twin to her daughter Faye; four brothers, Brown, Roy, Cecil and Chilton "Pete" Thomas; and two sisters, her twin, Velma Montgomery, and Myrtle West. The family suggests memorials to the Ninth and Columbia Church of Christ.
