Obituary

Services for Walter Lewis Lutrick, 86, of Abernathy will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, in the Abernathy First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Janet Edwards, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Strip-Pearce Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy. Mr. Lutrick died Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, at his home in Abernathy. He was born Sept. 8, 1926, on the family farm in the Lakeview Community to Travis Edward and Mabel (Pipkin) Lutrick. He began school at Lakeview School until it consolidated with Abernathy schools in 1942, where he transferred and participated in all sports. He enlisted in the 29th Infantry of the U.S. Army in 1945, stationed in Germany, and was honorably discharged in 1947. He attended North Texas State College on a basketball scholarship, where he met Mary Savage and they were married June 4, 1952, in Dallas. They returned to Abernathy in 1952, to the farms he loved. He joined the First United Methodist Church in 1954. Mr. Lutrick served on the ASCS Board for nine years, the Co-op Grain Board for 21 years and served as president for many of those years. He was an Honorary Chapter Farmer in the FFA, he was very involved with his children and grandchildren in 4-H, FFA, livestock shows, Little Dribblers and Little League and served on many church boards and activities. He is preceded in death by a brother, Charles Lutrick, in 2007, and a son-in-law, Gery Franklin, in 2011. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lutrick of Abernathy; three children, Larry Lutrick and wife Bambi and Scott Lutrick and wife Kimberly, all of Abernathy, and Carrie Lee Franklin of Lubbock; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Harvey Lutrick of Lubbock; and two sisters, Ann McCune of Abernathy and Bonnie Bell Baker of Baytown, Texas. The family suggests memorials be sent to the Strip Cemetery, c/o First State Bank, Box 150, Abernathy, TX 79311; the First United Methodist Church, 704 Ave. D, Abernathy, TX 79311; or to a favorite charity.
