Obituary

Funeral services for longtime Plainview pediatrician and community leader Dr. Dorothy Long, 86, will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Drew Travis, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. Dr. Long died at 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2002, in Covenant Hospital. She was born Dorothy Krause on Dec. 12, 1915, in New York City. She grew up in New York where she attended schools. She received her medical degree in 1941 from the University of New York. She did her residency in New York at the Metropolitan Hospital and entered into private practice in pediatrics.
On Feb. 1, 1942, she married Dr. John Long in New York City. They moved to Plainview in 1950 where she practiced for 45 years. She was instrumental in starting Austin Heights Community Center, FISH (Faith In Sharing House), YMCA Day Care, Parent?s Place, funded scholarships for African-Americans and started the Dorothy Long Poison Control Center. She was named Plainview?s Woman of the Year for 1967 by the Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, a longtime member of the American Cancer Society and American Pediatrics. She served on the Hale County board of Family Pride Community Coalition, Children?s Trust Fund of Texas. Her favorite hobby was oil painting. Survivors include her husband; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Nina and Tim Wiseley of Yakima, Wash., Barbara Long and Doug Mackenzie of Mountain View, Calif., and Patricia Fonville of Martindale; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Julie Long of Detroit, Mich.; six grandchildren, John Wiseley, Laura Wiseley, Cailin Mackenzie, Steven Fonville, Benjamin Long and Daniel Long. The family suggests memorials to the YMCA After School program, Faith In Sharing House, Austin Heights Community Center, or to the American Cancer Society.
